How do you get a 3D Portrait of yourself, a friend or loved one?

It all begins with a trip to the 3D Portraits Brooklyn studio, conveniently located on 9th Street in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn. We will discuss what you are looking for, what kind of 3D Portrait you would like, what kinds of materials appeal to you and what your budget is. Perhaps you are looking to capture your children or whole family in fun, affectionate moments. Or maybe you are looking for a more formal bust for your office desk. Whatever you have in mind, we will work together to make it a reality.

The next step is the 3D scanning process. We use a safe (no lasers) high-resolution scanning system based on photography that can instantly capture fleeting gestures and emotions. The subject(s) will sit or stand in a specially designed, custom photography stage while a set of cameras takes their picture. The session is relaxed and fun, in a comfortable setting with your favorite music playing in the background. Usually somewhere around 15-20 separate sets of photos are taken in one session.

Next, you can relax with a beverage while the photos are fed into a computer where the three-dimensional surface of the subject(s) are constructed. We will look at the results together and talk about which ones we like the best.

We will discuss the material options, finishing treatments and bases for the 3D Portrait. We have many samples at the studio to help guide your decision. Once everything has been worked out, we will take a deposit on the final price of the 3D Portrait, typically half of the total amount.

That's the end of the initial scanning session. It usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half. After that, we will take the scan(s) that you liked the best, generate high-resolution 3D models from them and perform any cleanup or adjustments that might need to take place. Then, usually in a day or two, you will receive an email with images of the final models, ready to go to the 3D printers. At this point, you give your final approval to go ahead with printing the 3D Portrait. If you choose not to go further, we will refund your deposit, less a fee for the scanning and processing.

Your 3D Portrait is then printed out using the latest in 3D printing technology, either here at the studio, or offsite, depending on the materials that you have chosen. After that, the 3D Portrait is cleaned and finished to your specification, and optionally mounted on the base of your choice.

After between 1 and 3 weeks your 3D Portrait will be ready for you to come and pick up, or it can be shipped to you for a small additional charge.

That's all there is to it!

Of course, if anything about your new 3D Portrait is unsatisfactory to you, we will do our utmost to fix it for you. We pride ourselves on the quality of the work we do, and we want every customer to be perfectly satisfied and happy with the 3D Portrait we create for you.
